So many of his 37 (surviving) films are so good -- and all are unique.

I see this film as Ozu's response to Naruse's Repast. It covers a lot of similar territory, but explores it from a different perspective. One hint that Ozu might really be doing this is his choice of Kumeko Urabe to play his heroine's mother (the same functional role she played in Repast).Michael E. To BFP, it typifies, with enormous emotional power, Ozu's archetypal theme of life being frustrating, and difficult. But Sugiyama and his wife learn it could also be far worse, especially if they are no longer together. Especially glad you highlighted the key role played by the Chisu Ryo character in Sugiyama's transformation.esco65https://www.blogger.com/profile/09414978383355233004noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8586568821168314585.post-60100790723276927122007-07-30T11:51:00.000-05:002007-07-30T11:51:00.000-05:00The moving shot of the waving grain (with the moun...The moving shot of the waving grain (with the mountain in the background) comes at the end of Bakushu (called Early Summer in English, but literally "barley harvest time", barley being the first major crop of the Japanese agricultural year).Michael E.
